Last night I awoke from a dream. My heart was racing like I had been instilled with an amount of fear that was unimaginable, yet I felt such a sense of will and determination that fear was running from me and not towards me. I had a sense that I was surrounded by my dearest friends yet there was no one there and the silence was deafening. My lungs were full but I couldn't breath because there was no air, only dust, fire and smoke. In spite of this, I felt so full of life. I couldn't see because my eyes were drowning in a pool of hot soot and ash, and a black cloud surrounded me . Yet in the darkness, my path and destination seemed so clear, like I was holding the hand of an angel. I could barely walk, yet felt only the pain of others in need. I wasn't sure if I'd died and gone to heaven or just awoken in hell. I had no idea where I was, or how I got there but knew in my heart I was where I wanted to be. Contradictions filled my mind, but an enormous sense of courage made everything thing clear.
My pillow was wet with sweat and my mind was a blur when I awoke. As reality set in and the dream started to fade I tried desperately to fall back to sleep, I yearned for those feelings just one more time. For in this chaotic, powerful and horrifying dream, I felt a sense of determination that has yet to visit my personal reality. Amongst the strongest feelings of fear, in dreams or in reality, there in lied the most powerful sense of courage, and strength.
Last night, I dreamed I was a New York Firefighter.
To the men and women that live my dream as a reality, I say thank you. For it is not only those in your arms that you save, but all of us who look up to you that are saved as well. Until the recent tragedy, I had no real idea of what or who a hero was. Through your never ending acts of bravery and kindness, you have taught us all the true meaning of the word.
Thank you,
Robert DuVernet
