September 11, 2001
September 11th happened unexpectedly hitting hard. Before that day probably no one ever thought such terror could exist and that it could be accomplished so easily. For most it was just a day on which something major had happened; for the rest it was a tragedy of unspeakable proportions.
It began as a normal day; people went to work, schools, some were leaving the work. Then a roar of a Boeing plane sounded over the heads of Manhattan residents and a loud thunder of it slamming into tower 1 around 8:46am. The tower swung back and forth; people stopped on their tracks to look up into clear sky. They didn't see the plane anymore; they saw an office building set on fire at its tip. No panic, people staring up or slowly walking away. Inside most thought it was just another bomb. Reluctantly residents began evacuating the 1st tower.
As time passed, more and more spectators gathered to watch the unbelievable event. The rich black smoke was coming out of the north tower and some residents were seen sticking out of windows above gaping hole. Soon news all over the country were showing burning tower live on all stations.
About quarter of an hour passed and more people were trying to evacuate both towers. Planes in the air were being grounded. More firefighters were arriving without slightest clue on how to handle the situation. Then, as all cameras were aimed to the 1st tower, another plane was caught approaching the towers. Split moment later it slammed into tower 2 with a spectacular fireball. news were saying "it appears as another plane hit a south tower." people below were stunned; people inside 1st tower heard only distant roar; people inside the 2nd were running out.
From that moment on it was only a matter of time before an inevitable would happen. Both towers were set on fire which could melt any steel and slowly but steadily it was eating away the insides.
Tower residents were stuck inside small stairwells trying to call their relatives to find out what was going on. Firefighters below were putting on all of their gear and trying to go up the same stairs. Without a slightest clue how the fires should be put out firefighters were coordinating rescue efforts by sending more people upstairs slowing down traffic. Outside people were calmly leaving the area still refusing to believe the facts. Time to time they saw the most terrified and desperate acts - residents trapped above the fires were leaping toward death. Those below had to continue what they were doing while bodies were falling from the skies all over.
This went on for a little less than an hour. Then all of a sudden a cracking sound went from the direction of the world trade center. People turned around and in panic began running in the opposite direction. The 2nd tower's steel gave way and top floors were falling causing whole tower to collapse sending dust, paper, and all contents flying all over downtown Manhattan. It turned black and in few seconds all that could be seen was thick smog over and around the neighborhood buildings. Less than half an hour later the 1st tower collapsed like a flower sending ash and debris flying at 50 miles per hour at people below. The world trade center was already gone and later that day 7WTC collapsed too.
In less than two hours lives were changed forever. Thousands of people were reported killed in WTC and workers rushed to the rescue of possible survivors to the ground zero. Firefighters and police officers became heroes for going into burning towers and slowing down the evacuation. History showed that it is hard to stop fires in high-rise buildings and it was decided to leave fire burn itself out for several times. Despite that, firefighters had to go up the small stairs delaying people coming down so that they could reach few floors to check they were empty. Yet regular people who were leaving their desks and coming back for their co-workers to help them are never mentioned and forgotten. None of those whose body parts were recovered in the ruins later on were mentioned.
Not only World Trade Center has suffered that day. Pentagon in Washington, DC was attacked as well claiming more than 100 people. Another, the 4th, plane was aimed at Pentagon too, but it crashed on its way.
