"Every year Monarch butterflies make a 3,000-mile migration to Mexico, where they reproduce and die, thereby regenerating the species.
In his latest installation, Matthews will construct a grid of nearly 3,000 hand-painted umbrellas, each with an image of a Monarch butterfly, across the three-acre lawn of Battery Park in lower Manhattan. The piece will remain in place from June 7 to June 20, 2004. Whether viewed from near or afar, the umbrellas will create a stunning and vibrant impression of a migrating flutter of flame-colored butterflies."
